LAG Prizag is a Croatian non-profit organization that aims to foster the rural development of 11 municipalities. Members from the LAG come from the economic, civil and public sector. Their mission is to improve the quality of life and foster citizenship in this area. Various civil organizations are a part of LAG PRIZAG: cultural and artistic associations, associations of young people, associations of women, fire departments and sports associations. These associations involve many volunteers in their activities, thus being able to provide a majority of volunteers to participate in projects and engage in the public domain. LAG PRIZAG continuously works on bringing the EU closer to the citizens of its area – by writing and applying projects for EU funding, cooperation in the implementation of ongoing projects, thus striving for local rural development.

The Municipality of Breznički Hum is a local government unit that directly addresses the needs of its citizens. The Municipality is located in Croatia and invests great efforts in raising the awareness and knowledge levels of citizens and associations on the importance of volunteering. As a local government, the Municipality initiates different thematic events each year to promote the local associations and seeks to ensure the highest quality of all events, always looking for possibilities of improvement. The Municipality of Breznički Hum has experience in organizing and implementing various public events including public demonstration activities, sporting events, festivals, training, etc. The Municipality has been active in forming new partnerships with other cities and towns throughout Europe and regards the exchange of knowledge as fundamental to local development.

Municipality of Gornja Rijeka, located in Croatia, is a local self-government that provides services of local domain that directly affect needs of its citizens. The municipality takes care of settlements and urban infrastructure, child and social care, health care, education and sport. It annually organizes public events to provoke the engagement of citizens and raise public interest. Cultural development and the protection of the nature is a prime in Gornja Rijeka, being a ethnic and historical origin of the noble. The municipality continuously aims to foster active citizenship and promote EU positivity with the participation in various manifestations and EU projects. Gornja Rijeka has been actively developing transnational cooperations through these years to exchange examples of good practice and gain knowledge of improving its rural development.

Municipality of Breznica is a Croatian local self-government that provides various services for its citizens: urban planning, education, social and childcare, fire and civil defense, maintenance, etc. Breznica values the rural area and nature. It strives to improve active citizenship and public engagement through annual events and civic organizations that contribute to social welfare. Through this project the municipality will gain great knowledge in active citizenship and improve public engagement. Breznica will also build a stable basis for further development of its area. The goal of the municipality is to develop partnerships, promote the value of EU and ensure quality life for its citizens.

Municipality of Krivogashtani is a local self-unit where citizens are actively engaged in self-government. It is located on Prilepsko field, the northwest of Macedonia. Krivogashtani takes care of the urban landscape, preservation of nature, social and childcare, health of its citizens and much more. It aims for active citizenship and public engagement in all fields of life – and spreading EU positivity in all regions.

The right for local self-government is being achieved through municipality representatives and through participation in decision-making policy. According to this, the municipality aims to foster civic participation and further engagement of citizens in decision-making. The project will contribute to these goals and enrich the cultural and european spirit of this Macedonian region.

Municipality of Sopronkövesd is a small Hungarian municipality, with about 1500 inhabitants. Its citizens receive all that’s needed for decent life: urban infrastructure, child and social care, health care, education, fire and civil defense and cultural uplifting. The municipality addresses the needs of citizens and fosters their participation in policymaking. Establishing a positive EU atmosphere is very important and addressed through funding of several projects. Sopronkövesd aims to establish deep bonds across the border for the exchange of valuable knowledge and strengthening of EU’s identity. Taking care of nature, people, engaging through volunteerism and open dialogue is the basis for a successful rural strategy. A unique association which gathers the youth and artists is a perfect example of active citizenship in Sopronkövesd – Kövirózsa Kulturális Egyesület. With this project citizens’ engagement will be fostered and opportunities for gathering experience will be seized.

The Municipality of Novo mesto is a municipality in southeast Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia. There are approximately 36,000 people living in the municipality, with over 22,000 living in the town of Novo mesto that is the seat of the municipality.

Novo mesto, the seventh largest town in Slovenia, is the administrative, economic, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, health and sports center of the Southeast Region of Slovenia. It is recognizable by its exceptionally successful pharmaceutical, automotive and other industries and is called “the export capital of Slovenia”. The rich archaeological sites in Novo mesto have also made it known as Novo mesto – The Town of Situlae.

Kameno municipality is a municipality in Burgas Province, Bulgaria. It has adopted a long-term strategy for social services and development of more tolerant and democratic local society. It aims to provide accessible, diverse and quality social services that contribute to improved quality of life, maximum independence, full realization and care for individuals and communities at risk with focus on disadvantaged groups of population.

The municipality combines different types of ethnical groups who create great mixture of folklore and traditions. As a public body responsible for local community, Kameno municipality continuously stimulates the democratic engagement and civic participation of its population by organizing numerous initiatives aiming to widen the dialogue on the European values and cohesion policy.

The territorial administrative Unit of Bistrita City is an authority of the local public administration in Romania. Its main activities are: drafting the strategies regarding the economic, social and environment development of the territorial-administrative unit; coordinating the local interest; public services’ implementation provided through specialized services or bodies of public service and public utility services of local interest; management of the public and private domain; drafting the urban and spatial plans, etc.

Bistrita also organizes studies, basic diagnosis and programs of social and economic development and ensures the necessary conditions for a well-functioning of the educational, health, culture, youth and sport institutions. Organizing fairs, places and entertainment parks for the citizens is also an important aspect of it. Active citizenship and engagement of the people is of great interest for the municipality.

Dagda parish is situated in the eastern part of Latvia and is known as an ecologically clean area. Dagda Council and its Educational Department manage seven public schools and three kindergartens, which provide up-to-date education and prepare young generations for the labor market.

After taking part in several EU partnership projects, the municipality is the first instance of democratic engagement and civic participation. Dagda has organized many multicultural events and participated in several cross-border cooperation projects. It focuses on contemporary cultural movements, inventions and gives special importance to people of all age gaining self-confidence to express themselves more clearly and independently. The local community will benefit from this project through learning opportunities that allow young people to express their own values and explore the values of other youth from different parts of Europe with empathy.

The Municipality of Sremski Karlovci is situated in Vojvodina, the Republic of Serbia. The main industries are services, agriculture, fruit growing, viticulture and tourism (with the national park Fruška gora near). The municipality actively works on strengthening local capacities, democracy and civic participation and supports over 50 NGO’s and their programs.

There is a civil movement in the municipality’s region, as well as a youth and volunteer center that organizes international volunteering camps and takes part in similar international camps. Sremski Karlovci has its own youth office that aims to foster the engagement of youth in the civil sector and also has a lot of experience in transnational cooperation (with municipalities Tivat from Montenegro, Erdut from Croatia and town Doboj from Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Torres Novas is a Portuguese municipality with 37.000 inhabitants, 270 km2 and a central position in the country, 100 km north of Lisbon, with good communication and transport connections. The Municipality is the public local authority, with competences in different administrative areas like urban policies and taxes, environment, social affairs, economic development, culture and education. Cooperation with the Europe Direct Center of Santarém, European projects developed under the Lifelong Learning Programme, Youth in Action and Erasmus+, and taking part of the International Association of Educating Cities or the UNESCO Network of Associated Libraries, are good examples of its commitment with democratic engagement and civic participation. It often implements activities in order to promote European values and the European identity, and to avoid distances between citizens and the European institutions. More recently, it joined the Child Friendly Cities project, from UNICEF.

“Mladi za Marof“ (The youth for Marof) is a Croatian organization that aims to improve the quality of life of people and bring their social inclusion and activism on a higher level. The youth’s goals are to develop cultural, democratic, social and ecological conscience among the youth, promote volunteerism, encourage cooperation of young people with different interests and activities and to increase influence of young people on the local community. The NGO has volunteers who participate in various training courses for youth workers. They organize many local events, but also host and cooperate in international youth projects since 2009 through the Erasmus+ Youth in Action program. The youth runs a Center for non-formal learning where they organize workshops for the local youth in cooperation with a high school and other local organizations.

Društvo za razvijanje prostovoljnega dela Novo mesto (Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo mesto) is Slovenian non-governmental and humanitarian organization, working in the public interest in the area of social care, youth and culture. Its mission is to contribute to more inclusive and open society for all. Therefore, two leading programs deal with inclusion of socially excluded groups and with the stimulation of the NGO development and civil dialogue. Activities within the programs are performed by experts and voluntary work thus promoting the values of solidarity, tolerance, voluntarism, active living, clean environment, citizenship awareness and inter-cultural dialogue. DRPDNM is skilled in local, regional, national and international projects as it deals with projects funded by local, national and EU programs and funds. It informs, educates, promotes the NGO sector and social entrepreneurship and strengthens civil dialogue.

Association of citizens “Danube 1245” was established on the 10th October in 2015. It is located in Vojvodina, the Republic of Serbia. Danube 1245 is local actor active on addressing local challenges by formulating and advocating citizens’ activism supporting their active role and participation in local decision-making. It establishes local partnerships providing sufficient expertise in addressing the challenges through common projects, organization of various meetings and usage of toolbox for citizen’s participation.

Association works on strengthening the capacity of membership for acting on local, regional/international level. It develops and promotes values, innovative services and support exchange good practices. Danube 1245 develops partnerships and performs various projects under domestic and international cooperation.
